Zambia seceded from the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland in October 1964. A set of sterling coinage was issued in 1966. Zambia converted to decimal coinage in 1969 and this type was issued in bronze in 1968 and 1978. It was struck again 1982-83 in copper plated steel, whereupon the denomination was suspended. Zambia has not issued any coinage for circulation since a fifty ngwee of 1992 (KM 30). The reverse features a martial eagle. President Kenneth Kaunda, depicted on the obverse, was ousted in the elections of 1991 and died in 2021, aged 97.
