SB622-72724r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72724 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "YUGOSLAVIA. 5000 Dinara, 1982. NGC PROOF-68 Ultra Cameo. Commemorating the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics. This near flawless proof demonstrates wonderful cameo nature with highly reflective fields and crisply frosted devices. A few minor spots prevent an even higher grade, but even still this example presents elite eye appeal." This specimen was issued by Yugoslavia in the later years of Tito's rule. Yugoslavia was originally formed out of the wreckage of the Austro-Hungarian Empire after World War One. The king of Serbia was given the throne and he and his successors ruled uneasily until the Nazi invasion of 1941. Resistance against the Germans spawned numerous partisan guerilla groups, of which the most successful was the Communist Serbs led by Tito, who went on to head the country after the war. His stature may be measured by the fact that he was one of the few to stand up to Stalin in the fifties. This NCLT was one of a series issued to promote the games held at Sarajevo in February 1984. Other issues included KM 95, 104, 111 (gold 5000 dinara) and KM 92, 102, 103, 109, 110, 116 (silver 500 dinara) and KM 90, 98, 99, 105, 106 (silver 100 dinara). The sporting facilities paid for by the sale of these coins were mostly destroyed in the Bosnian War of 1992-95 and are today abandoned.

Recorded mintage: 55,000 proofs.

Specification: 8 g, 0.900 fine gold, 24 mm diameter, 0.2315 troy oz AGW.
