Yemen AH 956 uthmani
This specimen was lot 1862 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMANS IN YEMEN: Süleyman I, 1520-1566, AR 'uthmani, 'Adan, AH956, bold date, typical weak strike, XF, ex Kenneth A. Bovenkamp Collection." This uthmani was struck in Yemen, a province nominally subject to the sultan but another poverty-stricken backwater barely worth the expense of conquest. Numista comments, "Examples of ‘uthmanis (the Yemeni version of the Ottoman akçe) during the reign of Süleyman I were minted in several locations, the most common being Sana'a and Zabid, but also in Aden, Damarmar, Kawkaban, and Sa'dah. Some were inscribed with the accession year of the sultan, 926AH (1520CE), but in at least some of the mints the actual year of minting was included on the coin, rare at this stage in Ottoman numismatic history." These coins are known dated AH 946-964 (1539-57 AD).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specifications: silver, this specimen is 0.51 g.
