This specimen was lot 1775 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabruck, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,670 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, Maximilian I. (IV.) Joseph, 1799-1806-1825. Goldgulden o. J. Neujahrsgoldgulden. Präsent der Stadt Würzburg. GOLD. Henkelspur, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Die Stadt Würzburg war seit dem 15. Jahrhundert verpflichtet, ihrem jeweiligen Landesherren als Herzog von Franken eine Zahlung von 50 Goldgulden zum Neujahr eines jeden Jahres zu leisten, vermutlich in Ablösung einer alten Naturalabgabe. Auch nachdem Würzburg an Bayern gefallen war, wurde dieser Brauch beibehalten. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, undated gold gulden, for the New Year, presented by the city of Wurzburg. Mount mark, very fine to extremely fine. Since the 15th century, the city of Würzburg was obliged to make a payment of 50 gold gulden to their suzerains as Duke of Franconia on the New Year of each year, presumably in replacement of an old levy in kind. Even after Würzburg fell to Bavaria, this custom was maintained.)"
This type is not listed in the SCWC. Several gold gulden are listed under Würzburg during the period 1806-14 when it was ruled by a Hapsburg, but they all have dates.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.25 g, .770 fine gold, this specimen 3,25 g.
