Wurttemberg 1607 thaler Dav-7828
This specimen was lot 4437 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,402 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH. Friedrich I. 1593-1608. Reichstaler 1607, Christophstal, mit Titel Rudolfs II. RR Henkelspur, Reste alter Vergoldung, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg, Frederick I, 1593-1608, thaler of 1607, in the name of Rudolf II. Rare, mount mark, remnants of an old gilding, very fine.)
Wenn Müseler und Kirchheimer diese Stücke nicht in ihre Bücher aufgenommen haben, kann man diese Münze dennoch als Ausbeuteprägung ansehen. Auch Nau hat die Ausprägung im Zusammenhang mit dem Silberausbringen der Gruben um Freudenstadt gesehen. Es ist eine Parallele zu den Andreas-Prägungen, die auch nicht ausdrücklich sagen, daß sie aus dem Silber der Grube bei St. Andreasberg geprägt wurden. Dies gilt auch für die Schlickschen Joachimstaler und einige schlesische Bergwerksmünzen. (Even if Müseler and Kirchheimer did not include these pieces in their books on mining thaler, this coin can still be seen as an example thereof. Nau also saw the expression in connection with the silver mining of the mines around Freudenstadt. It is a parallel to the Andreas coins, which also do not expressly say that they were made from the silver of the mine near St. Andreasberg. This also applies to the Joachimstalers of Schlick and some Silesian mining coins.)"
The coinage of Württemberg prior to the nineteenth century is generally rare and this thaler struck to promote the Christophstal mine is no exception.
