Wurttemberg 1507 thaler Dav-9955
This specimen was lot 4434 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$15,703 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"WÜRTTEMBERG, WÜRTTEMBERG, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH. Ulrich, 1498-1550. Taler 1507, Stuttgart. Reitertaler. Der geharnischte Herzog reitet l. mit Federhelm, unter dem Roß die Jahreszahl//Zweifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen. RR Schön-sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Wurttemberg, Ulrich, 1498-1550, thaler of 1507, Stuttgart mint, "Rider" thaler. Obverse: armored and mounted duke charges left, date below; reverse: double helmeted arms. Rare, fine to very fine.)
Der Reitertaler des Herzogs Ulrich ist der erste württembergische Taler und zählt zu den begehrtesten süddeutschen Prägungen überhaupt. Die repräsentative Prägung, deren festlicher Charakter durch den Lilienbogenrahmen auf der Vorderseite unterstrichen wird, wurde vermutlich zum 20. Geburtstag des Herzogs ausgegeben. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatte Ulrich bereits den Landshuter Erbfolgekrieg (1504/1505) hinter sich, in dem er sich bezüglich Bayern-Landshut zugunsten von Albrecht IV. von Wittelsbach durchsetzen konnte. (Duke Ulrich's riding thaler is the first thaler of Württemberg and is one of the most coveted southern German coins. The design, the festive character of which is underlined by the lily arch frame on the front, was probably issued for the duke's 20th birthday. By this time Ulrich had already been through the Landshut War of Succession (1504-05), in which he was able to assert himself in favor of Albrecht IV von Wittelsbach in relation to Bavaria-Landshut.)"
A 1½ and double thaler are also noted for this date.
