Wismar 1523 2 schilling
This specimen was lot 1293 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "WISMAR: Free Imperial City, AR doppelschilling, 1523, shielded arms over cross-paté // St. Laurence standing holding feather and manuscript, an attractive lustrous mint state example! PCGS graded MS62." Wismar was a port on the Baltic sea. Long part of the duchy of Mecklenburg, it obtained considerable independence as a member of the Hanseatic League. Doppelschillings were minted there intermittently throughout the sixteenth century but are not recorded after 1610. This type was struck 1523 and 1532. A doppelschilling varied between 1/16 and 1/14 thaler. Wismar was under Swedish rule 1648-1803.
