Weid 1744-M ducat Fr-3520
This specimen was lot 736 in Stack's "Vermuele, Ward & Mexico Maxico" sale (New York, January 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"GERMAN STATES. WIED. Count Friedrich Alexander, 1744-1791. Ducat, 1744. Birth of an Heir. Armored bust r., MARME below. Rv. All-Seeing Eye over flourishing tree with twin shoots, exergue, OB SPEM RENASCENTEM/ 1744, For Having Hope Renewed. An ornate design whose beauty is amplified by brightly flashing fields. AU-58 (NGC)."
This tiny county on the Rhine issued a variety of stubers, kreuzers, fractional thalers and ducats before being annexed to the Prussian Rhineland. This issue is among the more common gold coins but it is still rare and expensive.
