Vietnam 1991 100 dong KM-35
This specimen was lot 75638 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "VIETNAM. 100 Dong, 1991. NGC PROOF-69 Ultra Cameo. Steamship 'Savannah' on obverse. A brilliant Proof with mirrored fields and frosty central devices." In 1975, the communists captured Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam, ending the twenty year civil war. Having won the war, the regime proceeded to lose the peace. Incompetence, corruption and repression vitiated what resources remained to rebuild the shattered country. Rampant inflation has reduced the đồng from 2,050 đồng per dollar (1980) to 25,135 đồng/dollar (2024). Coins do not circulate.
Recorded mintage: 10,000.
Specification: 16 g, 0.999 fine silver, 38 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-35.
