CNG Lissner sale, lot 545

This specimen was lot 545 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $2,722.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY, Venezia (Venice). Governo Provvisioro. 1848-1849. AR 5 Lire. Venezia (Venice) mint. Dated 22 March 1848 V. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65. Gem uncirculated with superb blue, gold and amber toning. Only one graded higher in 66. Extremely rare this choice. Purchased from Warren Tucker, January 1979." This five lire piece was one of two types struck during an insurrection against Austrian rule in 1848. Without foreign support, the rebellion collapsed. Venice would not be incorporated into a united Italy until 1866. The provisional government also issued gold 20 lire, silver 15 and 25 centesimi and bronze five, three and one centesimo coins. This specimen sold for four times the catalog value.
