Venice 1792 1/2 tallero
This specimen was lot 21113 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Venice. 1/2 Tallero, 1792. Ludovico Manin (1779-89). NGC AU-55. Allegorical bust of the Republic; Reverse: Nimbate Lion of Saint Mark seated facing left. CONDITIONALLY SCARCE with few surviving examples after many years of heavy circulation for the issue. Attractive dove gray with underlying luster." The Duchy of Venice was actually an oligarchy nominally ruled by an elected doge. Venetian independence was terminated by the Napoleonic invasions and the area fell to Austria in 1797. This type, the last one before annexation, is recorded for 1789-97. Similar mezzi talleri were issued beginning in 1756.
