This specimen is from a two-year type struck 1989-90; earlier versions from 1977-78 and 1987 were pure nickel. This date is from Mexico City; the 1989 issue was purchased from Germany. The portrait is of Simon Bolivar, hero of independence, who was born in Venezuela.

Recorded mintage: 400,000,000 (enough to issue 14 pieces to every inhabitant of Venezuela).

Specification: 1.5 g, nickel-plated steel, 17 mm diameter.
