Vaud 1804 1/2 batzen KM-Pn1
This specimen was lot 4521 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$762 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Waadt/Vaud, Kanton, Halbbatzen 1804, Lausanne. Grosses Kantonswappen, unten Blumenverzierung. Ohne Zweige im Feld. Rv. In einem Reben-/Ährenkranz eingefasst 1/2 Batz I804 in 3 Zeilen. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Vaud, half batzen of 1804, Lausanne mint. Obverse: large cantonal arms, floral decoration below, no branches in the field; reverse: value and date in wreath. Very rare, Very Fine.)"
Formerly a Bernese bailiwick, Vaud joined the Swiss Confederation as an independent canton in 1803, at which time it began to issue coins. This is a rare type that the SCWC calls a pattern; the regular issue ( KM 6) has the date on the shield side and the legend "½ Batz/5. RAP." on the reverse.
Record mintage: 2,962,000 for 1804-08.
Specification: 1.9 g, billon, 23 mm diameter, this specimen 1.91 g.
