This specimen was lot 74266 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal (Vatican City). 5 Lire, 1945 Year VII. Rome Mint. Pius XII. NGC MS-66. An impressive premium Gem, delivering much enticing beauty and allure, with a gleaming and highly engaging luster." This type was struck 1942-46 and was issued in sets with the five centesimi thru one hundred lire. All of the Vatican coins of World War Two are scarce, wartime shortages reducing their production and distribution. "Caritas" means "Charity".
