Utrecht 1772 2 silver ducats Dav-1844
This specimen was lot 43262 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $12,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "Extremely Rare Utrecht Piefort, NETHERLANDS. Utrecht. 2 Ducaton Piefort, 1772. Utrecht Mint. NGC MS-61. An EXTREMELY RARE Ducaton Piefort, offering a charming appeal for which we can find almost no parallel examples trading. The strike is bold and thorough, with limited handling consistent for the grade, but there is nothing acting as a hindrance against the eye appeal. Luster pools most forcefully in the protected areas of the design, only increasing the appeal of the example. For completeness, we note NGC has included the wrong Davenport on the encapsulation, as Dav-1831 refers to the more common "Rijder" variety." This is not a piefort ducaton but a piefort silver ducat. Altho rare, we show examples from 1774 and 1776.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 56.5 g, 0.873 fine silver, this specimen 56.14 g.
