This type was struck in 1968 in Santiago, Chile, for Uruguay. Uruguayan coinage was sporadic in the twentieth century and many issues are rare; this one is common. It honored José Artigas, hero of the war of independence from Argentina and Brazil. It is accompanied by a similar one and five pesos. This bust first appeared on the one, two, five and ten centésimos of 1953.

Recorded mintage: 90,000,000 plus a few proofs.
