Stack's Bowers October 2020 auction, part of lot 92423
SB1020-92423d.jpg

This specimen was part of lot 92423 in Stack's Bowers October 2020 auction, which sold for $204. The lot description noted, "1964 Proof Set with Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar (PCGS). Included are: Kennedy Half Dollar, Accented Hair Proof-66 DCAM; Washington Quarter Proof-67; Roosevelt Dime Proof-67; Jefferson Nickel Proof-67; and Lincoln Cent Proof-66 RD." The Washington quarter superseded the Standing Liberty quarter in 1932 and is still in production, nearly ninety years later. The type was silver for 1932-64. The 1964 and 1964-D, the last silver dates, were struck 1964-65 in massive quantities in a futile attempt to drown the coin hoarders in silver. The mint, in the end, could not stem rising bullion prices and the denomination was converted to copper-nickel in 1965, which alloy is still in use.

Recorded Mintage: 560,390,585.

Specification: 6.25 grams, 0.900 fine silver, .180 troy oz ASW, 24.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 164.
