Jean Elsen sale 161, lot 1176
JE161-1176r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1176 in Jean Elsen sale 161 (Brussels, March 2025), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,167 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ÉTATS-UNIS, AV 20 dollars, 1876 CC, Carson City. Petits coups sur la tranche. (United States, gold twenty dollars of 1876, Carson City mint. Minor rim nicks, about Very Fine.)"

This issue is an available date of a type issued 1850-1907. The reverse was modified twice; first in 1867 to add the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" (shown here) and second in 1877 to change "TWENTY D." to "TWENTY DOLLARS". This second type is fairly common in lightly circulated condition but rare choice. This date is not rare but Carson City gold always obtains a premium. The later issues did not circulate at all, spending the decades in various vaults, and are readily available in any grade.

Recorded mintage: 138,441.

Specification: 33.43 g, 0.900 fine gold, reeded edge.

Catalog reference: KM 74.2, Fr-176.
