Jean Elsen sale 163, lot 1814
JE163-1814r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1814 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,097 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ÉTATS-UNIS, AV 3 dollars, 1874. (United States, gold three dollars of 1874. Very Fine.)"

After a brief flare of popularity on its introduction in 1854, the three dollar gold piece quickly proved unnecessary but the mint kept striking them until 1889. The last branch mint issue was the 1860-S. Most dates after the Civil War are rare but the 1874 and 1878 are fairly common. Only one design was used.

Recorded mintage: 41,820.

Specification: 5.02 g, 0.900 fine gold, 20.5 mm diameter, engraved by James Longacre.

Catalog reference: KM 84, Fr-124.
