US 1858C 5 dollars rev.jpg

The 1858-C is probably the most available Half Eagle produced by the Charlotte mint, competing with the 1847-C in terms of surviving numbers. Probably no more than 330-340 collectible examples exist in Fine - Mint State grades. Of course, in comparison with other dates and denominations, the 1858-C is still a very scarce coin to locate in problem-free condition. Production again flirted with 40,000, but this level never materialized, as mintages continued to drop prior to the mint's closure in 1861. This example exhibits original orange-gold coloration with some proof-like reflectivity around/about the devices.

Recorded Mintage: 38,856.

Specification: 21.6 mm diameter, 8.359 g, 0.900 fine gold, .2418 troy oz AGW, reeded edge.
