This type, struck 1839-57 in large quantities, is readily available in circulated condition. The introduction of Gobrecht's hub of Liberty reduced the year-to-year variation in her appearance but plenty of varieties exist nonetheless. For 1856, the major divisions are "slanting 5's", shown here, and "upright 5's", of equal value.
