This type, struck 1837 at Philadelphia and 1838 on New Orleans in moderate quantities, is available in circulated condition. Stars were added to the obverse in 1838 and the obverse was modified again in 1840. This date is also known with a "large date" variety with a square top 3.
Recorded mintage: 2,276,000 (including liberty cap type).
Specification: 1.34 g, 0.900 fine silver, .038 troy oz ASW, 15.5 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Christian Gobrecht.
