This specimen was issued by the United Arab Emirates to honor UNICEF. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. The economy is entirely dependent on oil. This specimen was lot 4045 in Goldberg sale 75 (Los Angeles, September 2013), where it sold for $690. The catalog description[1] noted, "United Arab Emirates. 750 Dirhams, 1980. Year of the Child. Choice Brilliant Proof."
