United Arab Emirates 1980 50 dirhams
This specimen was lot 72467 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. 50 Dirhams, AH 1400/1980. Valcambi Mint. PCGS PROOF-69 Deep Cameo. Commemorating the international year of the child, this practically flawless example features a very sharp cameo contrast with no evidence of toning, haziness, or fog." This specimen was issued by the United Arab Emirates to honor UNICEF. The region, on the south coast of the Persian Gulf, was loosely ruled by the Ottoman Turks until the arrival of the British in the 1890's. The British signed treaties with the local sheikhs and the area was renamed the Trucial States, which name it held until the British withdrawal in 1971. The economy is entirely dependent on oil.
