Künker sale 335, lot 5164

This specimen was lot 5164 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,440 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, TOSCANA Leopoldo II. di Lorena, 1824-1859. Francescone (10 Paoli) 1839, Florenz. Prachtexemplar. Feine Patina, fast Stempelglanz. (Italy, grand duchy of Tuscany, Leopold II of Lorraine, 1824-59, Francescone of 1839, Florence mint. Cabinet piece, fine patina, about uncirculated.)"

This type is listed for 1833-41 and is four times the price of the subsequent francescone (Dav-160). Leopold, a junior Hapsburg prince, ruled Tuscany until it was incorporated into the united kingdom of Italy in 1859-60.
