Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75313
SB224-75313r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75313 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Tuscany. Francescone (10 Paoli), 1824. Pisa Mint. Ferdinando III. PCGS EF-45. This coin exhibits light wear, but retains flashes of surface reflectiveness in the protected areas of both the obverse and reverse. Toned to a pleasing uniform gray, deepening somewhat towards the periphery with subtle gold highlights and just a hint of cobalt on the obverse." The Grand Duchy of Tuscany, founded by the Medici in the early 1500's, collapsed in 1799 with the arrival of Napoleon's army. The region went thru many vicissitudes until it was annexed outright by Napoleon in 1807, only to be returned to the Hapsburgs in 1814. It was incorporated into the new kingdom of Italy in 1860. This type was struck 1814-15, 1819-20, 1824 for the restored Ferdinand III. This example realized only half the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 27.51 g, 0.917 fine silver, lettered edge.

Catalog reference: KM-C59, Dav-156.
