Tuscany 1820 5 paoli
This specimen was lot 27981 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $499.38. The catalog description[1] noted, "Tuscany. Ferdinando III 5 Paoli 1820, VF/XF, darkly toned throughout with some light encrustation and striking weakness in the centers, an extremely scarce two-year issue." The Grand Duchy of Tuscany, founded by the Medici in the early 1500's, collapsed in 1799 with the arrival of Napoleon's army. The region went thru many vicissitudes until it was annexed outright by Napoleon in 1807, only to be returned to the Hapsburgs in 1814. It was incorporated into the new kingdom of Italy in 1860. This denomination, roughly equal to a half dollar, was issued only irregularly and is scarce.
