Sincona sale 46, lot 556

This specimen was lot 556 in Sincona sale 46 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 275 CHF (about US$330 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY, Florence, Giovanni Gaston de Medici, 1723-1737. Zecchino 1729. Sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler. (grand duchy of Tuscany, John Gaston de Medici, 1723-37, zecchino of 1729. Very fine, Flan defects.)"

This type is listed for 1723-36 and is rare despite the many years of issue. The SCWC lists this as a fiorino (3.18 g. 0.999 fine) but the weight suggests that zecchino is correct. By the early eighteenth century, Tuscany was a quiet backwater, no longer the proud republic of Florence, leader of the Renaissance. Duke Giovanni Gaston was the last of the Medici dukes; on his death in 1737 the grand duchy passed to Francis of Lorraine, husband of Maria Theresia of Austria. Tuscany remained in the hands of various Austrian princelings until she was annexed by France in 1807.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, this specimen 3.44 g.

Catalog reference: MIR 345/7, Fr-328.
