Stephen Album internet sale 28, lot 1028

The first specimen was lot 2790 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "TUSCANY: Giovanni Gaston, 1723-1737, AR 5 quattrini (crazia), ND, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." The second specimen was lot 1028 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALIAN STATES: FLORENCE: Gian Gastone de’Medici, 1723-1733, AR crazia, ND (1723-37), Saint John standing facing, with his hand. raised and a long processional cross, a lovely example, PCGS graded MS63." No such denomination as a five quattrini is listed in the SCWC for Tuscany but then no minor coinage is listed for this ruler. The degenerate Gian Gastone de' Medici was the last Medici to rule Tuscany. His death without issue in 1737 ended almost 300 years of rule by that family. The grand duchy passed to Francis of Lorraine, who became Holy Roman emperor in 1745.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specifications: silver or billon.

Catalog reference: Pucci-30, CNI-30/31, MIR-348 MI, KM unlisted.
