Turkey AH 1223(2) 10 para
The first specimen was lot 1953 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AR 10 para, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 2, first monetary series, XF, ex Kenneth A. Bovenkamp Collection." The second specimen was lot 1954 in the same sale, where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AR 10 para, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 2, first series, struck only in regnal years 1 and 2, rarer for year 2, XF, R, ex Kenneth A. Bovenkamp Collection." The third specimen was lot 1955 in the same sale, where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, AR 10 para, Kostantiniye, AH1223 year 2, first series, broad flan, average fineness 46.5%; pierced, XF, R, ex Kenneth A. Bovenkamp Collection." This type was struck years 1 and 2. Varieties exist in the shape of the rose next to the toughra, visible here. Debasement was continuous throughout the sultan's reign and coinage types were usually shortlived. Forty para equalled a kuruş.
