Turkey AH 1203(16) zeri mahbub
This specimen was lot 43565 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. Ottoman Empire. Zeri Mahbub, AH 1203 Year 16 (1804). Selim III. NGC MS-65." This type was struck years 10-19. It has a rather low catalog value but is usually found damaged from being removed from jewelry. The gold was the victim of frequent manipulation and the denominations changed names in a confusing manner. The SCWC lists zeri mahbubs, rumi altins, adli altins, yeni altins and hayriye altins for this period. Matters were regularized in the reign of Abdul Mejid, with gold coins issued in multiples of the kuruş.
