This type was struck in Istanbul 1921-22 during the reign of Kemal Ataturk, president of Turkey 1923-38. It and the other issues of the early twenties were issued in the throes of the war between Greece, the Kemalists and the remnants of the Ottoman regime, from which Kemal emerged triumphant. It is the last of a denomination introduced during the rule of Sultan Abdul Mejid (r. 1839-61) and among the last Turkish coins using arabic letters. Issues after 1935 all use the Roman alphabet.
