Turkey 1992 20000 lira KM-1057
This specimen was lot 3488 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 22 € (about US$29 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Turquía. 1992. 20000 liras. Juegos Olímpicos - Barcelona '92. Ciclismo. En estuche. AG. Proof." In 1970, US$1 = 11.3 lira; in 1990, US$1 = 2,500 lira; in 1995, US$1 = 43,000 lira. The SCWC notes that this Olympic NCLT was struck in 1990. This may be the case, as this denomination was not used after 1990, but the coin is dated 1992 so that is how we will file it. It was accompanied by KM 1077, which featured speed skating. Wikipedia comments, "Turkey, then the Ottoman Empire, first participated at the Olympic Games in 1908 and has sent athletes to compete in most editions of the Summer Olympic Games since then.... Turkey has also participated in most Winter Olympic Games since their first appearance in 1936. Turkish athletes have won a total of 103 medals, divided into 41 golds, 26 silvers and 36 bronzes. Turkey won the most medals in wrestling."
