This type was struck in AH 1308-1318 in the name of Muhammad al-Sadiq Bey. By this point in Tunisian history, the Ottomans had lost influence and France had gained control through debt ownership, making Tunisia a protectorate. Starting in AH 1308/1891 AD, all coins began showing both Arabic and French legends, and the denominations were decimalized. All minting during the French protectorate period occurred in Paris (A mint mark).
The example shown is a silver one franc dated AH 1309 / 1892 AD. For this type, only 1308 and 1309 are normally seen on the market. The remainder of dates have extremely low mintages.
Recorded mintage: 1,575,000.
Specification: 5 g, 0.835 silver, 0.1342 ASW.
Catalog reference: KM 224.
