Sincona sale 31, lot 58

This specimen was lot 58 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 16,000 CHF (about US$18,993 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMAN TUNIS | Mahmud II (1223-1255ah/1808-1839ce) zer-i-mehbub 1236ah (1820ce) AU RRRR vf-xf." This exceedingly rare coin, the only gold issue of Tunisia during the reign of sultan Mahmud II, was one of the highlights of the sale. The next gold issue would be milled five, ten, twenty and fifty piastres of AH 1272.
