The coin shown is a billon 1 kharub from the reign of Sultan Mahmud I, minted in Tunis. Tunisia was under the control of the Ottomans for centuries until lack of financial resources forced it into dependence on France, which made it a protectorate in 1881. Sixteen kharub (named after the carob seed) made a piastre or riyal, the largest silver coin issued in Tunisia in the eighteenth century.
