This specimen was lot 205 in Sincona sale 31 (Zürich, October 2016), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$594 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH PROTECTORATE | Reign of Ali Bey (1299-1320ah/1882-1902ce) 2 francs 1899ce/1317ah AR RR -unc. Following the death of Jean Lagrange in the year 1896ce, Henri Auguste Jules Patey (1855-1930ce) was appointed chief engraver at the Paris Mint. His privy mark on coins is a torch." This type was struck 1891-1900 as part of the decimal reform introduced by the French occupiers. The type was struck for circulation 1891-92 only.
