Transylvania 1715 thaler Dav-1102
This specimen was lot 1524 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabruck, June 2015), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,550 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Karl VI. 1711-1740. Reichstaler 1715, Siebenbürgen. RR Herrliche Patina, Schrötlingsfehler, attraktives, vorzügliches Exemplar. (Holy Roman Empire, Charles VI, 1711-40, thaler of 1715, for Transylvania. Rare, handsome toning, planchet cracks, attractive. extremely fine.)"
Like most coins of Transylvania, this type (struck 1715) is rare and expensive, tho less so than Dav-1101. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany." By 1715, the Hapsburgs had evicted the Turks and the native dynasty from the province and were firmly in control for the next two centuries.
Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
Specification: silver.
