Künker sale 294, lot 3304

This specimen was lot 3304 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €5,000 (about US$6,739 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"UNGARN, SIEBENüRGEN, FüRSTEN, Michael Apafi, 1661-1690. Dukat 1666, AF, Arx Fogaras. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. Michael Apafi wurde im November 1661 von den Ständen zum fürsten gewählt. Nach der Niederlage der Türken vor Wien 1683 schloß der fürst mit Kaiser Leopold einen Vertrag, infolge dessen der Landtag die Oberhoheit des Kaisers anerkannte. Er starb im April 1690. (principality of Transylvania, Michael Apafi, 1661-90, ducat of 1666, Arx Fogaras mint. Very rare, attractive very fine example. Michael Apafi was elected Prince in November 1661. After the defeat of the Turks before Vienna in 1683, the prince concluded a treaty with Emperor Leopold, in consequence of which the Landtag recognized the Emperor's supremacy. He died in April 1690.)"

This type is recorded for 1666 only and is rare. The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy.
