Transylvania 1662 ducat Fr-465
This specimen was lot 30307 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "No Recent Offerings Michael Apafi gold Ducat 1662, MS61 NGC. Obv. Bust right with fur cap and scepter. Rev. Crowned arms in cartouche with date. Full mint brilliance with slightly soft strike. This is a very rare issue, with no recent records of auction. Although Michael Apafi was a rather prolific producer of coins, many of his issues are very rare, such as this elusive two-year type." The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. This type is listed for 1662-63 only.
