Transylvania 1661-CV thaler Dav-4767
This specimen was lot 42825 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $31,720. The catalog description[1] noted, "Enchanting Taler in Mint State Condition, TRANSYLVANIA. Taler, 1661-CV. Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca) Mint. Janos Kemeny. PCGS MS-61. An exceedingly RARE and intensely interesting Taler that simply does not get offered with any frequency, much less in an enviable Mint State grade. This stunner provides beautiful strike quality, and rich tone with a hint of electric blue color. Given that the vast majority of Transylvanian Talers of this period survive with damage, it would be no surprise for this example to reach a stupefying figure when offered. From the Charles “Cheech” Litman Collection." This type was struck 1661 only and is rare. Other thalers of 1661 included Dav-4766, -4768, -4769 and -4770. Janos' brief reign (1661-62) ended with his death in battle against the Turks.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 28-29 g, silver, 44 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Dav-4767; KM-345.
