Tournai 1663 patagon Dav-4470
This specimen was lot 53703 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIUM. Tournai. Patagon, 1663. Philip IV. PCGS AU-53. From the Historia Moolah Collection." Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. The type shown here was struck at the Tournai mint 1622-36, 1643-65. A very similar coin was struck for Brabant. The SCWC notes the Flemish issues as the most common, followed by the Brabant issue, tho none are plentiful today. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.
Specification: 28.10 g, .875 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-4470; KM-A42.
