Tournai (1581) 40 sols
This specimen was lot 1332 in Jean Elsen sale 154 (Brussels, March 2023), where it sold for €22,000 (about US$28,485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"TOURNAI, assiégée par Alexandre Farnèse (1er octobre - 30 novembre 1581), Laiton 40 sols, 2e émission (23 novembre 1581). Sur flan carré uniface. D/ Tour dans un cartouche. Sur le tour: + VRGENTE· OBSID· TORN· 1581. Au-dessus, poinçon aux armes d'Espinoy. En dessous, valeur ·XL·S· dans un cartouche orné. De la plus haute rareté. Très Beau. (city of Tournai besieged by Alexander Farnese, October-November 1581, brass forty sols, second emission of November 1581, struck uniface. Obverse: tower in a cartouche, the arms of Espinoy below with the value at the bottom. Very Fine.)
Tournai fut la dernière ville des provinces du Sud fidèle aux Etats généraux en révolte contre Philippe II. Après la prise de Maastricht et l'occupation du Brabant, le prince de Parme vint y mettre le siège le 5 octobre 1581. En l'absence du gouverneur de la ville, le prince d'Espinoy, la défense était dirigée par son épouse Christine de Lalaing et par François de Divion. Après avoir vaillamment résisté près de deux mois, Tournai capitula le 30 novembre 1581. Durant le siège eurent lieu deux émissions de monnaie de nécessité. Le 20 octobre, l'argenterie réquisitionnée fut fondue et monnayée en pièces de 50, 25 et 12 1/2 sols. Le 23 novembre, faute d'argent, on frappa des pièces de 40, 20 et 10 sols en cuivre et en laiton. (Tournai was the last town of the souther provinces to remain faithful to the States General in revolt against Philip II. After the capture of Maastricht and the occupation of Brabant, the prince of Parma arrived and began the siege on October 5, 1581. In the absence of the governor of the city, the prince d'Espinoy, the defense was directed by his wife Christine de Lalaing and François de Divion. After a valiant resistance of two months, Tournai surrendered on November 30, 1581. During the siege, there were two emissions of necessity coinage. On October 20, requisitioned silver was melted and struck into pieces of fifty, twenty-five and 12½ sols. On November 23, lacking silver, forty, twenty and ten sols were struck in copper and brass.)"
