Togo Alb27-1226r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1226 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $223.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "TOGO: AR 5000 francs, 1977. 10th Anniversary of the Presidency of General Gnassingbe Eyadema, reported mintage of just 150 pieces, Proof, R." This rare coin was accompanied by silver 10000 francs and gold 15000, 25000 and 50000 francs. It is unlikely to have circulated outside the circle of the president's relatives and cronies. The president, having seized power in 1967, survived coups and assassination attempts to rule until his death in 2005.

Recorded mintage: 150 proofs.

Specification: 24.36 g, 0.925 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-8.
