Teutonic Order 1761 3 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 746 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €160 (about US$216 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHER ORDEN, DEUTSCHER ORDEN IN MERGENTHEIM Clemens August von Bayern, 1732-1761. Groschen 1761, Nürnberg, auf seinen Tod. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Teutonic Order in Mergentheim, Clement Augustus of Bavaria, 1732-61, groschen of 1761, on the death of the grandmaster. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
In the late eighteenth century, the Teutonic Order was in advanced decay, the Order's holdings being reduced to a few abbeys in Germany. Accordingly, the coinage is scanty and rare. This is the only groschen (three kreuzer) issued in the eighteenth century. It was accompanied by a quarter thaler (KM 142).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: Prokisch 238, KM 140.
