Tanzania 1989 10 shilingi
This specimen was lot 73615 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "TANZANIA. 10 Shilingi, 1989. Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. The final year in a short, three-year run, this Gem certainly dazzles the eye and is tied with a small handful of others for the top spot in the PCGS census. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Tanzania is a union of the former British colonies of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and has been independent since 1964. Julius Nyerere (1922-99), shown on the obverse, was president of Tanzania 1964-85. The ten shilingi shown was issued 1987-89. It recycled a design used on a twenty shilingi of 1981 (KM 13). The next issue of this denomination used nickel plated steel. In 1982, US$1 = 9.4 shillings.
