Tannu Tuva 1934 kopejek
This specimen was lot 33691 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "TANNU TUVA. Kopek, 1934. Leningrad (St. Petersburg) Mint. NGC AU Details--Cleaned. The smallest denomination in the series, this example displays some minor wear and cleaning, but nevertheless retains great charm." Tannu Tuva was originally part of the Chinese Empire's province of Outer Mongolia but fell under Russian control in late Tsarist times. During the chaos following World War One and that regime's collapse, the Tuvinians successfully declared independence in 1921. However, once Stalin had consolidated power in the mid-1920's, Tannu Tuva became a Russian protectorate and was ultimately annexed to the Soviet Union in 1944. The only issue of coinage for the land was in 1933-34, including this kopejek, minted in Leningrad.
