Tannu Tuva 1934 2 kopejek
This specimen was lot 72815 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "TANNU TUVA. 2 Kopejek, 1934. PCGS AU-58 Gold Shield. Single finest certified on the PCGS population report. An attractive and original looking example with a bold strike and lovely brassy patina." Tannu Tuva was originally part of the Chinese Empire's province of Outer Mongolia but fell under Russian control in late Tsarist times. During the chaos following World War One and that regime's collapse, the Tuvinians successfully declared independence in 1921. However, once Stalin had consolidated power in the mid-1920's, Tannu Tuva became a Russian protectorate and was ultimately annexed to the Soviet Union in 1944. The only issue of coinage for the land was in 1933-34, including this two kopejek, almost certainly minted in Moscow or Leningrad.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: aluminum bronze.
