Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 53477
SB421-53477r.jpg

This specimen was lot 53477 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $20,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Taiwan. Gold Off-Metal 5 Yuan, Year 62 (1973). PCGS SP Genuine--Rim Repaired, Unc Details Gold Shield. An interesting issue normally struck in copper-nickel seldom appearing on the market in this gold off-metal striking exhibiting a bold motif with lovely satiny surfaces and nice cartwheel luster. Several small faint scratches on the reverse rim appear to account for the details designation of "Rim Repaired", but are hardly a distraction, though a thin pin scratch on the reverse is also noticed mentioned for accuracy. Despite its shortcomings this intriguing issue offers a pleasing appearance displaying a thin veneer of tone adding to its originality and eye appeal sure to add depth to the next collection it enters." This type is common and depicts Chiang Kai-Shek, who ruled the island 1949-75.

Recorded mintage: 12,360,000.

Specification: production issue: copper nickel, 9.5 g, 29 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: L&M-1106; KM-Pn65 (gold), KM Y548 (copper-nickel).
