Sincona sale 18, lot 3764

This specimen was lot 3764 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 15,500 (about US$20,423 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"5 Franken 1928. Sehr selten. FDC. (Switzerland, five francs of 1928, very rare, uncirculated.)"

This William Tell type superseded a Helvetia head type struck 1888-1916. This date is rare. Confederation coinage commenced in 1850; prior to that, each canton struck its own coinage. In 1931, the five francs was reduced to 15 grams, 0.835 fine, and struck in that form until 1969.

Recorded mintage: 24,000 plus specimens.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, this specimen 25.04 g.
